Head and Neck Injuries
When is a CT scan necessary
after hitting your head?
CT scans are indicated for those
individuals suspected of having a skull fracture or a bleed inside
the skull.
CT scans do not show evidence of a
concussion rather a concussion is a diagnosis arrived at by a
physician's clinical assessment. Symptoms of a concussion
include nausea, dizziness, immediate loss of consciousness, and
headache.
Although CT scans are excellent tools
to rule out skull fracture and bleeding in the brain, they are not
without risks and thus should be used only in those circumstances
in which the likelihood is a bit higher.
When do neck injuries need to
be evaluated?
Any time the head is jerked around or undergoes a significant
bump, a neck injury is possible. Midline pain, numbness or
tingling of the hands/arms, or severe pain may suggest either a
fracture or a subluxation (malalignment) of the cervical
spine. Xrays or CT scans are necessary to exclude
injury. If suspected, do not move the injured individual
without professional assistance and immediately seek medical
care.
